ndications

Pepto is indicated for the relief of:

Upset stomach
Indigestion
Heartburn
Nausea
Diarrhoea

Pharmacology

Antacid Action: Bismuth Subsalicylate coats the ulcer surface and protects it from acid and pepsin. It stimulates mucus and bicarbonate secretion and reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl) to form bismuth oxychloride and salicylic acid, thereby reducing gastric acidity.

Anti-diarrhoeal Action: It promotes absorption of water and electrolytes from the intestine. In infectious diarrhoea, it binds toxins produced by E. coli, disrupts H. pylori, and helps prevent its attachment to the intestinal wall.

Anti-inflammatory Action: After conversion to salicylic acid, it inhibits prostaglandin G/H synthase-1, reducing inflammation and coating irritated gastrointestinal tissues, which helps decrease fluid loss.
