Description: Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms, including Lactobacillus species, Bifidobacterium species, and yeasts, which may beneficially affect the host by improving the balance of intestinal microflora.

Lactobacillus acidophilus occurs naturally in dairy, grains, meat, fish, and in the human intestine, mouth, and vagina. It protects against unhealthy organisms.
Lactobacillus bulgaricus is used in yogurt production, breaks down lactose, and helps those with lactose intolerance.
Bifidobacterium bifidum colonizes the human colon, especially in breast-fed infants, and supports gut health.

Pharmacology: Probiotics counter gastrointestinal inflammation by improving epithelial barrier function, cytokine secretion, and antibacterial effects. They reduce GI problems by stimulating lactic acid-producing bacteria, antagonizing pathogens, and competing for binding sites. Evidence suggests probiotics induce regulatory T cells, reducing inflammation. They also enhance nonspecific immune activity and IgA response, with antioxidant abilities such as chelating metals and scavenging free radicals.
