Pharmacology
The H1 histamine receptor plays a key role in allergic reactions. When exposed to allergens, mast cells release histamine and other inflammatory substances. Histamine activates H1 receptors, leading to symptoms like itching, runny nose, and watery eyes.

Fexofenadine is an “inverse agonist” of the H1 receptor. It blocks the receptor and prevents allergic reactions. It is highly selective and does not cause significant sedation or affect the brain because it does not cross the blood-brain barrier.
