Hexicord (Chlorhexidine Gluconate) Therapeutic Class: Antiseptic and Disinfectant

Indications Hexicord is indicated for the prophylaxis of omphalitis (infection of the umbilical cord) in newborns.

Pharmacology Chlorhexidine is a broad‑spectrum biocide effective against Gram‑positive and Gram‑negative bacteria and fungi. It acts by disrupting the cell membrane, showing both bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity depending on concentration. Chlorhexidine kills nearly 100% of bacteria within 30 seconds in vitro and binds strongly to skin, minimizing risk of opportunistic infections.

Preterm infants (<32 weeks or <1.5 kg): Apply a single 3 g gel dose within 24 hours after birth. Clean the cord stump and surrounding skin before application. Wash hands before and after use. Do not combine with other products or use occlusive dressings.
